The 2023 Major League Soccer season is finally upon us, and the Columbus Crew looks to embark on a new journey under first-year head coach Wilfried Nancy, who signed with the club this offseason. With a new head coach and a talented core returning, the Black & Gold hope to improve their standing in the Eastern Conference this year.
However, Columbus parted ways with multiple key pieces this offseason that were part of the magical 2020 MLS Cup run. Former captain Jonathan Mensah, midfielders Derrick Etienne Jr. and Artur, and defender/midfielder Pedro Santos are all with new clubs around MLS. The Crew did bring in forward Christian Ramirez from Scottish Premier League side Aberdeen and former Seattle Sounders defender Jimmy Medranda to join the group.
With a new head coach, and a new look, the Black & Gold are set for their first task of the season, and that is on the road to the reigning Eastern Conference champion, the Philadelphia Union. On what is expected to be a cold Saturday night along the Delaware River, the Union look to start off their season strong after a successful 2022 that saw the team fall just short of winning a trophy, losing in the MLS Cup Final to LAFC on penalty kicks.
There’s no telling how Columbus will line up, who will be captain and who is going to start. but what we do know is that MLS is back and with a new way to watch games this year.
Here is everything you need to know regarding the opening game for Columbus.
