It has been a relatively quiet offseason so far for the Columbus Crew when it comes to player acquisition. That changed on Friday when the Black & Gold announced the team has signed defender Jimmy Medranda via free agency.
Medranda, 28, is a 10-year veteran of Major League Soccer, having played for Sporting Kansas City, Nashville SC and the Seattle Sounders. The left back also played in Colombia for Deportivo Pereira. Medranda joins Columbus on a one-year deal with an option for the 2024 season. The terms of the deal were not disclosed.
“Jimmy is a proven winner, and we are proud to have a player with his MLS experience choose to sign with the Crew,” Black & Gold president and general manager Tim Bezbatchenko said in the press release announcing Medranda’s signing. “Bringing a decade of MLS experience with him to Columbus, Jimmy’s addition to our roster will help provide depth and create competition on our backline, and we look forward to having him as part of our team.”
After coming through the academy system at Deportivo Pereira, Medranda made his professional debut for the club during the 2012-13 season. He appeared 16 times across all competitions for El Grande Matecaña before joining Sporting on loan in the middle of the 2013 MLS season. Kansas City brought Medranda in on a permanent deal ahead of the 2014 season, where he went on to make 95 appearances for the club and scored five goals and registered five assists.
Medranda was selected by Nashville SC in the 2019 MLS Expansion Draft. The defender only played once for Nashville that subsequent season before he was traded to the Sounders in October of 2020.
Once in Seattle, Medranda again became a regular contributor, playing 45 times for the Sounders, while contributing four goals and six assists over the last three seasons. Medranda was on the bench for Seattle in the 2020 MLS Cup Final against the Crew at Historic Crew Stadium. He came into the match in the 77th minute of the Black & Gold’s 3-0 victory.
Throughout his career, Medranda has been a part of a number of championship teams. Despite a loss to the Crew, he has an MLS Cup title (2013) to his name, as well as two U.S. Open Cup wins (2015 and 2017) and CONCACAF Champions League (2022).
Medranda fills a position of need at left back for Columbus. After allowing Pedro Santos to depart this offseason, the only left back on the roster for the Crew is second-year professional Will Sands, meaning Medranda could step into a starting role right away for the Black & Gold.
It is still yet to be seen how new head coach Wilfried Nancy will want his Columbus side to line up, but the addition of Medranda gives him more options.
