Columbus Crew striker Gyasi Zardes will trade the black and gold for red, white and blue in October. The Crew’s joint top goal scorer was called up by for the United States Men’s National Team upcoming FIFA World Cup qualifying matches. Zardes missed out on the September matches but is poised to play over this international break.

A major highlight for Zardes will be potentially playing for the USMNT in Columbus when the United States takes on Costa Rica on Oct. 13 at Field. It could also be a homecoming for former Black & Gold goalkeeper Zack Steffen, now of Manchester City, and will be former Crew manager Gregg Berhalter, now head coach of the United States national team.

Zardes last played for the United States in July when he was a core member of the Gold Cup team that won the trophy this past summer. He scored two goals in the competition including a late winner in the semifinal against Qatar. Zardes has scored 14 international goals in 62 caps and is looking for more in this upcoming month.

The United States Men’s National Team enters the October window in third place in the CONCACAF Octagonal after one win and two draws in September. The USMNT has to finish in the top three in the group to clinch an automatic berth in the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar. The team’s last match was massive for momentum with an emphatic 4-1 win in Honduras concluding those group of matches.

October’s games will be just as competitive with the USMNT beginning in Austin, Texas at Q2 Stadium facing Jamaica. The U.S. last played Jamaica in the Gold Cup quarterfinals where the team won 1-0. The Americans will then travel south to Panama City to take on the Panamanians on Oct. 10. The USA beat Panama in a friendly 6-2 in December last year.

The big match to conclude the October slate will in Columbus, Ohio as Crew fans will show up in American gear when the USMNT faces Costa Rica at Field. It will be the first international game played at the new downtown stadium with the Americans desperately needing points at home against a tough Los Ticos side.
