After a disappointing 4-1 loss to New York City FC on Friday night, the Columbus Crew looks to rebound against long-time rivals D.C. United on Wednesday. This is an important game for the Crew, who need to bounce back in a big way following the road defeat but haven’t had to do so after a loss of this manner since 2019.
While head coach Caleb Porter should see a couple of welcomed faces coming over the horizon soon after the United State won the Gold Cup on Sunday night, it is probably too soon to expect the likes of Gyasi Zardes, fresh off 120 minutes of game time in the final, to be ready in just a couple of days. In addition, there is a game coming on the weekend against Atlanta United to keep in the back of minds.
Columbus announced on Monday that the team will be without defensive midfielder Artur for 10-12 weeks, after the Brazilian hasn’t played in two months, so the injury news is no better than before, but points remain crucial. The Crew has battled the team’s way back into playoff contention, sitting just outside the top five in the Eastern Conference with a game in hand.
With Atlanta coming to town on Saturday, the Black & Gold have a couple of great opportunities to get points and move up the standings. Getting three-plus points this week would go a long way to help the Crew as the team fights to defend its MLS Cup title.
Beyond the midfield, both Josh Williams and Vito Wormgoor were listed as questionable on Columbus’ injury report heading into the D.C. game, meaning the Crew could add some depth at center back. The outside backs too could be a question mark where Pedro Santos has played well out of position but Harrison Afful struggled on Friday.
