On Wednesday, Major League Soccer released the selection procedures for the 2021 MLS All-Star game, which is to be held at LAFC’s Banc of California Stadium in Los Angeles. This year's All-Star game is set to feature the best of MLS as they take on the top players from Mexico’s Liga MX.

The selection process, unveiled by MLS is very detailed oriented. This process includes participation by fans, players and media. The voting process has been implemented with performance metrics from the current season to categorize players in positions, meaning they can be selected as a goalkeeper, right back, center back, left back, defensive midfielder, attacking midfielder and forward or winger.

Twelve players will be determined by the vote of MLS players, fans and media. Each of the three voting groups will be a combined one-third of the selection. Twelve additional players will be selected by head coach Bob Bradley and two specifically chosen my MLS Commissioner Don Garber.

Players must have appeared in 50 percent of this season’s matches for their team to qualify. Those who have not, are still eligible for selection by Bradley and/or Garber.

MLS All-Star Game Formats

Throughout the years, the MLS All-Star game has had five different formats, ranging from East vs. West (1996-1997, 1999-2001, 2004), MLS USA vs. MLS World (1998), All-Stars vs. Guest (2002-2003), All-Stars vs. Europe (2005-2019) and now MLS All-Stars vs Liga MX All-Stars (2021).

The MLS All-Stars vs Europe was the longest-standing format in MLS history. During its 14-year tenure, the MLS All-Stars won seven meetings, the team’s most recent coming in July of 2015 when the All-Stars defeated English Premier League side Tottenham Hotspur at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park in Commerce City, Colorado.
