After last Wednesday’s dramatic 2-2 draw, the Columbus Crew and CF Monterrey are set to rematch in Mexico on Cinco de Mayo in a highly anticipated second leg of the CONCACAF Champions League quarterfinal. The Black & Gold will enter the match in Estadio BBVA with a disadvantage having conceded two away goals last week but have a chance to make the semifinals for the first time in club history. Rayados can advance to their fifth Champions League semifinal with a 0-0 draw.
The Crew has drawn its last three matches with two scoreless results to start its Major League Soccer season. The team’s most recent result came on Saturday in Fort Lauderdale, Florida with a 0-0 tie against CF Montreal to get up to two points in the Eastern Conference table.
Columbus has a tall task at hand with a match on the road in Mexico, an environment MLS teams have struggled with in the past. The squad also will be missing playmaker Lucas Zelarayan, who is suspended from yellow card accumulation after receiving a controversial caution early in the first leg. Zelarayan scored and assisted in the 2-2 draw last week against his old club Tigres’ arch-rival.
Monterrey just finished its Liga MX season with a fourth place finish in the Torneo Guardianes section of the season. Rayados’ 1-0 win over Mazatlan, along with other results from around the league, was enough for an automatic spot in the Guardianes quarterfinals, giving the team a full week between this match against Columbus and its first leg in the Liga MX playoffs. The attack is expected to be bolstered from last week’s first leg with Vincent Janssen and Max Meza returning. Both players did not travel to Columbus last week.
