MLS unveil 2021 PRIMEBLUE kits

The Black & Gold will wear blue jerseys made from Parley Ocean Plastic.

Major League Soccer announced on Thursday that for the fourth time in five years, the league created a special jersey for each team for one weekend. This season, MLS partnered with Twitter to “honor supporters of the league’s teams with a unique jersey swap for the weekend of May 29.” with what the league is calling PRIMEBLUE jerseys.

The Columbus Crew faces Toronto FC on Saturday, May 29, and both teams will be in PRIMEBLUE kits.

Ahead of each MLS match over Memorial Day weekend, teams will honor fans who have made a positive impact in their communities. Fans who want to nominate someone deserving of recognition can do so on Twitter using the hashtag #JerseySwapEntry, tagging the club and sharing a brief description of why their nominee should be recognized. Those nominees will be taken from Thursday, May 20, until Friday, May 28.

As part of this celebration, the PRIMEBLUE jerseys — as they have been in the past — will be made from recycled ocean plastic.

“We are proud to partner with Twitter to recognize the stories of fans doing amazing things in our communities,” MLS senior vice president Dave Bruce said in a league press release. “We are a League defined by our unique supporter culture and this program is a way to honor inspirational fans and to share the positive impact of the MLS soccer community. We are also excited to flip the idea of the jersey swap on its head and find a progressive and unexpected twist with a great partner like Twitter.”

The jersey in itself is a mix of two ocean blue colors. The Nationwide sponsor and Columbus Crew badge are mixed in, with an orange color overlay. This is the sixth year that MLS and Parley for the Oceans have collaborated.

Parley for the Oceans is an organization that “addresses major threats towards our oceans, the most important ecosystem of our planet.” The collaboration between MLS, Adidas and Parley for the Oceans encourages fans to decrease plastic use and shift their attitudes and behaviors towards plastic pollution and our planet.

All MLS teams will wear a version of the PRIMEBLUE kits, some white and some blue, and fans that want to purchase a kit of their own, can visit the MLS Store.
