The Crew reveal new kits for 2021 season

The Black & Gold unveiled its “Community” and “Heritage” kits for the upcoming year.

The Columbus Crew unveiled its brand new look and showed off an exciting feature of the team’s new stadium on Tuesday morning. At the New Crew Stadium construction site in downtown Columbus, members of the Haslam, Johnson and Edwards families unveiled the Crew’s new community kit that will be worn for the upcoming 2021 season as well as the new tifo-rigging system, which will be an important feature of the Nordecke, Columbus’ supporters’ section.

In 2021, the Black & Gold will wear the black Heritage jerseys from last year as the primary kits and the new grey Community kit as the secondary uniform. It will be one of the few seasons in club history with no gold kit but the grey kit will include gold shorts and socks.

The new grey kit is accented with a white pattern watermark, something commonly found in MLS jerseys designed by Adidas. The Crew logo, accompanied by two silver stars, keeps its original colors on the front of the shirt with the Adidas and Nationwide logos in black. The sleeves have the new MLS Cup champions patch in black with a black stripe and gold trim on the edge.

The collar has a solid black color with a gold trim while the three, thick black shoulder stripes extending just to the start of the sleeve. Inside the collar features the “ColumbUS” logo in black text. Another detail of the community kit includes an Ohio logo in black on the bottom left of the shirt. The logo has a gold star right where Columbus is. The back of the jersey has black jersey numbers and player names.

In addition to the Community kit, the 2020 black Heritage uniform returns this season with some minor modifications. The changes include the Nationwide logo, the champions patch and the two stars above the Crew badge. This adjusted black kit was part of the presentation at New Crew Stadium that was only attended by the club’s ownership group, representatives from Nationwide and a few members of the media.

Equally as exciting was the presentation of the new tifo-rigging system at New Crew Stadium at Tuesday morning’s event, which was used to introduce the Community kit. The tifo system is among the largest in MLS and can support tifos, large banners that often extend over multiple sections of the stadium, as high as 80 feet and as long as 252 feet. The new Nordecke is set to have a capacity of more than 3,000 fans, making it the second-largest supporters’ section in the league. The section also will have two new patio decks and MLS’s first beer garden.

New Crew Stadium is scheduled to open in July in the midst of the 2021 Major League Soccer season. The 2020 MLS Cup champions will continue to play home games at historic Crew Stadium from April through June. The team is set to begin preseason training camp in Chula Vista, California on Wednesday in preparation for its first match of the season.

The Crew starts its 2021 campaign in Managua, Nicaragua on April 8 against Real Esteli in the first leg of the CONCACAF Champions League Round of 16. The Black & Gold could be suited up in its new grey jerseys for the encounter before hosting Esteli on April 15 at historic Crew Stadium a few days before the 2021 MLS season begins. The schedule is expected to be announced in the coming weeks.
