After one of the greatest starts to a season in club history, Columbus Crew SC hit a speed bump in recent matches. The Crew suffered its first loss of the season against New York City FC, followed by a rather disappointing draw against rivals FC Cincinnati all in the last week.
As the Black & Gold, ranked second in the Eastern Conference, prepared to take on the third place Philadelphia Union, the importance of the contest wasn’t lost on Crew fans.
The first half of the match was littered with close calls for the Union, stemming from defensive mistakes that had many Black & Gold fans nervous. The Columbus offense showed some fire, however, and created its own chances heading into halftime. While some fans appreciated the back and forth contest, others were still frustrated by the lack of goals.

The cry for goals was answered 10 minutes into the second half when Lucas Zelarayan did what the club-record signee does best and scored a beautiful banger of a goal from distance to give Columbus the 1-0 lead.
We could not be luckier as Crew fans to watch Lucas Zelarayan play. My goodness, is he magical to watch. #Crew96— Ryan Exline (@iamironman21) September 3, 2020
When the dust settled and the final whistle blew, the Crew secured the 1-0 victory after a hard fought 90 minutes. The win moved the Black & Gold back into first place in both the Eastern Conference and Supporters’ Shield standings and helped alleviate some fans’ weariness following two lackluster performances.

9 games for #Crew96, only 2 goals allowed, and top of the league. That is how it's done.— Cody (@iHyalt) September 3, 2020
