After grabbing revenge against Minnesota United at home for the team’s ninth win of the season, Columbus Crew SC’s midfielder pairing of Pedro Santos and Lucas Zelarayan were named to the Week 13 MLS Team of The Week. Both players scored and recorded an assist to lift the Crew past the Loons 2-1 on Wednesday night to stay on top of the Eastern Conference and Supporters’ Shield standings. Columbus remains unbeaten at home and is looking to continue the team’s hot start to close out the season in hopes of making a run to the MLS Cup.
Santos is becoming the player Crew fans thought he would be upon his arrival to Columbus in 2017. So far this season, Santos has started and played in 12 games, scoring three goals and recording six assists, taking 22 shots with 10 shots on goal. This is Santos’ first Team of the Week honors of the season. His game-winning goal — his third goal in four games — was an absolute blast from a tight angle to get past young Minnesota goalkeeper Dayne St. Clair and make the score 2-0 15 minutes into the second half.
Zelarayan has been nothing short of impressive since his arrival to Columbus this year. After scoring the first goal of the 2020 season against New York City FC in the Black & Gold’s home opener, he has filled the big shoes left vacant by Federico Higuain. Although he has been hit with the injury bug, Zelarayan has slowly inched back into his form and position with the Black & Gold. His impressive play was evident by scoring the first goal of the game against Minnesota in the first half. Zelarayan could have notched a brace but missed a penalty kick opportunity just before halftime. He had another chance for a second goal early in the second half when his curling shot from distance clanged off the post..
So far this season, Zelarayan has five goals and tallied four assists in 577 minutes so far for the Crew. He has so far taken 15 shots, seven of which were on goal. In his short time with the Black & Gold, Zelarayan has been named to MLS Team of the Week five times since the 2020 season has started.
The Crew now rounds out the first part of the Phase Two of the team’s MLS Return To Play schedule on Sunday against Toronto FC. The final stretch of nine games of the year begins against FC Dallas on Oct. 3.
