Best Bets for the return of the MLS regular season

Where should you lay your money down for this restart?

MLS: Columbus Crew SC at Atlanta United FC Douglas DeFelice-USA TODAY Sports

Editor’s Note: Ben Ferree joined Massive Report on loan from Pro Soccer USA until the end of the MLS season, bringing his regular gambling column to our pages. Ferree brought his Best Bets column to Massive Report for the MLS is Back Tournament and now will carry it over to the regular season. Enjoy!

Now that the MLS is Back Tournament has concluded, MLS is, well... back. And so too comes the gambling! The tournament provided some highs and more lows to my wallet — and yours too if you listened, unfortunately — but the season begins anew and hope springs eternal. Let’s get into this return to regular season play and where you should make your bets.

New to betting? Odds are expressed around the number 100, meaning $100 being wagered. For example, if a bet is listed as +200, it means betting $100 would win you $200. Conversely, a bet listed as -200 would mean you have to bet $200 to win $100.

Columbus Crew SC to beat the Chicago Fire: -110

The only team to collect three wins in the group stage should pick up right where it left off. Not sure if “home field advantage” still counts with likely no fans, but the majesty of MAPFRE Stadium can help propel the Crew to a win over a Fire team still finding its footing.

New York Derby ends in a draw: +230

Both New York City FC and the New York Red Bulls suffered mightily in the tournament, even though City did manage to advance. On paper, I would favor NYCFC, but the paper hasn’t played out in real life much for them yet this year. Chalk it up to a draw.

Philadelphia Union to beat the New England Revolution: +220

A surprising contender for the MLS is Back title, Philadelphia should remain a strong team in the Eastern Conference. Bruce Arena won’t be at the helm for New England this game due to the red card he picked up in the tournament, and missing that drunk uncle sideline vibe may bring the Revolution down a little.

Lock of the week- Los Angeles Football Club to beat LA Galaxy: -250

Minus 250?! That’s a big a favorite as you’ll see in the soccer gambling world, and it’s justified. Carlos Vela should be back playing, but LAFC wins this one handily even if he isn’t.
