Best Bets for the MLS is Back Round of 16

Where should you put your money this week?

MLS: Columbus Crew SC at FC Cincinnati Kim Klement-USA TODAY Sports

Boy. Last week’s Best Bets could not have gone worse. After two weeks of turning a profit, an 0-4 pick week from yours truly has evaporated any money bettors had. I apologize. But on we go. Surely that means this week will go better. Nowhere to go but up!

New to betting? Odds are expressed around the number 100, meaning $100 being wagered. For example, if a bet is listed as +200, it means betting $100 would win you $200. Conversely, a bet listed as -200 would mean you have to bet $200 to win $100.

Note: betting in knockout games is a little different. Over/unders and win/losses only apply to regulation time. If the games go to extra time, that doesn’t count for the purposes of the bet.

San Jose Earthquakes to beat the Vancouver Whitecaps: +100

I’m shocked the Whitecaps have made it this far (the same is true for FC Cincinnati and the Montreal Impact), but credit to them that they have. Vancouver’s run should come to an end, as San Jose is the perfect blend of a team that still has a lot to prove while still having talent. Some of the more successful squads will be treating the knockout round less seriously than the group stage because it doesn’t count for regular season points (Columbus Crew SC, for instance), but San Jose should end Vancouver’s Cinderella story.

Philadelphia Union vs. New England Revolution over 2.5 goals scored: -134

The Union scored in every group stage game. I think Philly could get the over against the Revs on their own, as they’re another team I think will be chasing the hardware seriously.

Lock of the Week- Portland Timbers to beat FC Cincinnati: -134

Look, the Lock of the Week hasn’t been so lock-ish. I get it. And Cincinnati has burned me before. But if Jaap Stam beats Portland, he will tie for the most MLS wins of any FC Cincinnati head coach with three. That’d be insane in just four games. Not that this tournament hasn’t been insane...

Profit if every bet is correct: $249.20

Profit to date: $-268.80 (this number was $131.20 just last week!)

Picks Record: 4-6

Lock of the Week Record: 1-2
