Massive guide: Who the Crew might face in the MLS is Back Round of 16; Group E scenarios

A full guide on what will happen in the rest of group play.

Columbus Crew SC clinched first place in Group E of the MLS is Back Tournament on Tuesday night with a 1-0 victory against Atlanta United. It sealed a perfect record for the Black & Gold with seven goals scored and zero conceded after victories against FC Cincinnati to open the tournament and the New York Red Bulls. Columbus will play again on Tuesday, July 28 at 8 p.m. ET in the Round of 16 while Atlanta is heading home.

The Crew will play the runners-up of Group D, which will be determined during Wednesday night’s late kick off between the Colorado Rapids and Minnesota United. That game is scheduled to start at 10:30 p.m. ET on ESPN.

The final Group E game will kick off at 8 p.m. ET on ESPN between Cincinnati and the Red Bulls. New York can clinch a spot in the Round of 16 with a win or draw. Cincinnati can finish in second place with a victory and possibly can still advance with a draw.

Here is a look at the possible Round of 16 opponents for the Crew and the last Group E scenarios entering Wednesday night’s games.

CREW ROUND OF 16 OPPONENT SCENARIOS

Scenario 1: Minnesota United win - Crew will play Sporting Kansas City

Scenario 2: Colorado Rapids win by at least two goals - Crew will play Real Salt Lake

Scenario 3: Colorado Rapids win 1-0 - Crew will play either Minnesota United or Real Salt Lake. Tiebreaker will be discipline points.

Scenario 4: Draw - Crew will play Minnesota United

Group E: Red Bulls win

1. Crew (9 pts)

2. Red Bulls (6 pts)

3. FC Cincinnati (3 pts)

4. Atlanta United (0 pts)

Red Bulls would advance and face the winner of Group F, which is either the Portland Timbers or Los Angeles Football Club. FC Cincinnati would be eliminated as a third place team based on goal difference.

Group E: FC Cincy win

1. Crew (9 pts)

2. FC Cincinnati (6 pts)

3. Red Bulls (3 pts)

4. Atlanta United (0 pts)

FC Cincinnati would advance to the Round of 16 and face either the Portland Timbers or LAFC. The Red Bulls could still possibly qualify and eliminate New York City FC if they score more goals in total.

Group E: Draw

1. Crew (9 pts)

2. Red Bulls (4 pts)

3. FC Cincinnati (4 pts)

4. Atlanta United (0 pts)

Red Bulls would advance to the Round of 16 and face either the Timbers or LAFC. FC Cincinnati would also advance as a third place team and eliminate NYCFC.
