Major League Soccer is doing everything the league can to keep fans engaged in the soccer community, as the global health pandemic, coronavirus, continues to put soccer on the back burner until at least June. Multiple clubs have been doing special home features, and also showing classic matches to give the fans the entertainment of watching their beloved club in exciting past matches.
Since the beginning of April, Columbus Crew SC has been dedicated to re-broadcasting classic and memorable matches. Games that the team has already aired so far include the 3-1 home win against the LA Galaxy and the 2-1 win over the Montreal Impact from the 2019 season, while also showing both legs of the Hell Is Real Derby against FC Cincinnati. The rain-soaked match against Atlanta United from last year has also been featured
Others include both penalty kick shootouts from the 2017 MLS Cup playoffs against Atlanta United and the 2018 MLS Cup playoffs against D.C. United, while the 2008 MLS Cup Final was the first in line.
On Monday, the Crew announced the special match that will be re-broadcasted for this week. On Wednesday, April 29, fans can enjoy the 2017 MLS Cup playoff match against New York City FC on the club’s official website. The stream is set for a 12 p.m. ET start. It’s important to note that any matches aired on columbuscrewsc.com will be geo-fenced to the Crew’s territory per MLS Guidelines.
The 2017 MLS Cup semifinals game against NYCFC which originally aired on Oct. 31, 2017, took place during troubling times as the club was battling a possible relocation threat from previous ownership. This is the first match of the two-leg series during the playoffs, as the Black & Gold claimed victory over their Bronx, New York counterparts by an aggregate score of 4-1.
Additional Columbus Crew programming includes a Kid’s Corner, which features videos and activities for children, home workouts led by assistant strength and conditioning coach Kelly Roderick. Also, Black & Gold broadcaster Jordan Angeli hosts ‘The Breakdown’ where she provides analysis from game scenarios and weekly Stay At Home recipes from team dietician Jay Short.
Supporters can also listen to the club’s weekly radio show ‘Inside The Crew,’ which airs on 97.1 the Fan every Tuesday at 8 p.m. ET.
Major League Soccer’s platform MLS Unites, aims to bring the soccer community together during the coronavirus pandemic. This week’s focus is MLS Unites to Discover New. Crew content was featured in last week’s theme MLS Unites For Those In Need, including the pitch at MAPFRE Stadium being engraved with a special message to those on the front line.
