Columbus Crew SC fans want to see the return of Major League Soccer play. But it may still be some time off before we have soccer back in the United States.
According to a number of reports, MLS is targeting an early June return to play. ESPN’s Jeff Carlisle reported on Wednesday that the league will postpone matches from the 2020 season through at least June 8, according to sources, due to the spread of the coronavirus in the U.S. and Canada. Sources within MLS have told Massive Report they are preparing for an even longer layoff.
It has been over a month since the last MLS game. Prior to the stoppage, the league went through two weeks of play, with each team taking part in two games.
Questions on whether or not games will return keep circling, and now it seems the return date to play gets farther and farther away. after MLS originally aimed to return to play on May 10, according to the CDC’s Guidelines on mass gatherings.
MLS commissioner Don Garber recently mentioned that the league was “mulling over” a decision on how to play games if and when the season returns. The idea that was brought up was the games would be played at neutral sites and behind closed doors, dubbing them as “Studio Games.”
Like the rest of MLS, the Crew has already played two games. The Black & Gold defeated New York City FC 1-0 in the team’s home opener on March before and 1-1 draw against the Seattle Sounders on the road on March 7. It was the week following the meeting with the Sounders that MLS announced the postponement of games due to the coronavirus.
For newcomers like Vito Wormgoor and Lucas Zelarayan, this certainly isn’t how they wanted to experience their first season in Columbus. From having a promising start to their Crew career to now being forced to stay home because of a virus pandemic, it’s undoubtedly frustrating.
And for the fans, the ongoing delay is certainly devastating. This year is the last full season at MAPFRE Stadium before the opening of the team’s new Downtown Stadium next summer. Black & Gold fans hoped to make as many new memories as possible in MAPFRE Stadium throughout the year and now wait to find out when or if they will be able to return.
This is an ongoing story and Massive Report will provide updates as they become available.
