Massive Introduction: Who is Derrick Smith?

Editor’s note: As Massive Report expands its staff in the coming week, we will introduce each new member by having them write a little something about themselves to help the MR community get to know them. Who are they? What’s their soccer background? How long have they been a fan of the Crew? Whatever they want to share to introduce themselves to our great and loyal readers. Today we introduce Derrick Smith.

It’s a great honor to have been selected as a writer for Massive Report for the 2020 season.

My name is Derrick Smith and I have been a supporter of America’s Hardest Working Team since the 90’s. Having grown up with Columbus Crew SC as a pre-teen and now well into male pattern baldness, I have many memories of fans, players, matches and the culture of soccer in our beautiful city. I plan to use that love of this city to highlight club and culture stories beyond the pitch, along with getting to know our club’s future at the Academy level.

I enjoy spending time with my family, working in real estate, hunting, fishing, spending time with friends and taking photos of people and places. I am an advocate for nuance and being who you are (hence my ability to watch a NASCAR race while editing photos of a runway shoot) and I hope to capture that spirit as it is related to the culture surrounding our hometown club. We all have a story to tell and I look forward to hearing and sharing stories from around the city and beyond about our Massive club. As a photographer, I hope to bring a visual element to my posts as well.
