The 2020 Major League Soccer season was a year unlike any other, but it was a year that saw the Columbus Crew overcome the odds and capture its second MLS Cup championship.
On a special postseason edition of The Crew Review Podcast, Massive Report editor Pat Murphy and contributor Orri Benatar joined host Andrew Atkins for an in-depth roundtable discussion on the trials and triumphs that 2020 held for the Black & Gold.
The trio discussed the MLS regular season, the history-making defensive start to Columbus’ season, and the slump that followed after Crew “hit a wall” named Toronto FC. Hear why the costly injuries, and the slump that followed, may have set the Black & Gold up for success in the MLS Cup playoffs. Finally, the hosts discuss what winning the MLS Cup in the final postseason match ever played at MAPFRE Stadium meant to them individually.
The hosts also discuss the difficulties of covering the team from a journalistic perspective with the restrictions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. Pat Murphy details the struggles of not being able to attend practices, or have the typical access to the Columbus Crew players and staff, while still trying to cover the club.
The conversations go deep, the White Claw runneth over, and the Crew was Reviewed in this special bonus episode of The Crew Review Podcast.
