To cap off an intriguing yet challenging year for the Columbus Crew, the Black & Gold defeated Atlanta United 2-1 at MAPFRE Stadium. It was an important win for the Crew, as the victory secured a third-place finish in the Eastern Conference standings and at least one home game in the MLS Cup playoffs against the New York Red Bulls on Nov. 21.
After Major League Soccer’s Decision Day, Columbus captain and center back Jonathan Mensah was named to the MLS Team of the Week for his performance against Atlanta United. Mensah is among the likes of Kevin Molino, Fredy Montero, Evan Bush and others who had an outstanding performance to round out the 2020 MLS regular seaon.
Mensah finished the match with a rating of 7.0, the fourth-highest on the squad after the win, racking up nine clearances and two blocks, tying his second-highest total of the season. Not only was his defensive effort up to par after a few disappointing games in a row, the Ghana native reached yet another club milestone, playing in every match and every single minute, along with making his 100th appearance in a Crew uniform.
The center back also recently signed a new contract this year, so things are looking pretty promising for the captain.
“It feels great to be wanted by the club for a couple more years,” Mensah said recently. “I’m grateful that they had confidence in me from day one and that they still do. My mentality is always to do my job and do it well. If you’re going to a new league, you need to bring something they don’t have so they want you more and love you more. That’s what I’ve done since day one and I’m grateful that the response has been real.”
Mensah was named captain of the Crew this year by head coach Caleb Porter and has since been one of the best defenders, not only for the club, but in the league.
With Mensah leading the way for the Black & Gold, Porter believes in his team heading into the postseason. Columbus will face the New York Red Bulls in the first round of the 2020 Audi MLS Cup Playoffs as the team begins its journey to hopefully landing its second ever MLS Cup in franchise history.
