It will be a special night when Columbus Crew SC hosts the Chicago Fire on Saturday night at MAPFRE Stadium. Not only will it mark the penultimate home game for the Black & Gold of the 2019 Major League Soccer regular season, but it will also be the team’s first “Alumni Night.”
On Monday, the club announced some of the former Crew stars that will be on hand at MAPFRE Stadium for Alumni Night. These names include defender Mike Clark, forward Jeff Cunningham, midfielder John Harkes, forward Alejandro Moreno and midfielder Duncan Oughton, among other former Black & Gold players.
“Crew SC alumni are a critical part of the community and the Black & Gold family. The alumni’s importance to the history and future of this Club is part of our identity,” Crew President and General Manager Tim Bezbatchenko said in the press release. “For supporters, players and staff, this will be a fantastic opportunity to welcome alumni back for this match as Columbus is always their home.”
Ahead of the game against the Fire, the Crew alumni players will sign autographs at different locations around MAPFRE Stadium’s plaza. This autograph sessions will take place from 6- 7 p.m. ET in advance of the 7:30 kickoff. Former players will also be in attendance at the Social Tailgate in the Stadium Club Tent, located on the west side of MAPFE Stadium. The alumni will then be honored during a halftime ceremony during the match.
This effort to connect with former Crew players and bring them back to MAPFRE Stadium is new this year following the change in ownership during the offseason. The new ownership group of Dee and Jimmy Haslam, as well as former team doctor Pete Edwards, look to bring a family atmosphere to the club following the Save The Crew efforts, and this will be the first Alumni Night in an ongoing effort to do so.
