Columbus Crew SC has made a number of signings this summer transfer window that either have or will have an impact on the 2019 season. Now the Black & Gold are adding a piece for the 2020 season.

The Crew signed Scottish midfielder/defender Chris Cadden, who most recently played for Motherwell FC of the Scottish Premiership. Cadden was immediately sent on loan to Oxford United FC of England’s League One, a team which he already joined, and become part of the Columbus roster for the 2020 season.

“We have been active during this transfer window in looking to strengthen our roster in both the short and long-term,” Crew President and General Manager Tim Bezbatchenko said in the press release announcing the signing of Cadden. “In negotiating this particular transaction, it simply made sense for all parties for the player to join the Club in 2020 after gaining valuable experience in England this summer and fall. A postseason push this year remains a critical priority for this Club and we will continue to use this transfer window to fortify our team to deliver results.”

Cadden played in the Scottish Premiership from 2013-19, making a total of 139 appearances, scoring 12 goals and registering 21 assists across all competitions. With Cadden on the roster, the Steelmen finished in second place in the Premiership in 2014 as well as playing in the League Cup Final in 2017-2018 and the Scottish Cup Final the same year.

As well as his time in the Premiership, Cadden spent the second half of the 2014-15 season on loan to Albion Rovers FC of League Two. While with Albion Rovers, Cadden played for the club 10 times, scoring two goals and helping the club win a League Two title and achieve promotion to League One.

Internationally, Cadden has twice played for the Scottish national team, making his first appearance for his country in an international friendly against Peru in May. Cadden also featured for Scotland at the Under-21 level 12 times, scoring one goal.
