Columbus Crew SC finally got back in the win column on Saturday night, defeating the Montreal Impact 2-1 at MAPFRE Stadium. It was the Black & Gold’s first victory since the 3-1 win against the LA Galaxy on May 8.
Winger David Accam scored the game-winning goal in the 46th minute on assists from Pedro Santos and Hector Jimenez. On Monday, he was named to the bench for the MLS Team of the Week.
Accam is the first Crew player to be named to the MLS Team of the Week since Santos following the 2-2 draw with New York City FC on June 1. Prior to last week, the tie with City was the last result Columbus earned, losing five consecutive MLS matches before Wednesday’s 2-2 draw at the Chicago Fire.
In the win, Accam was dangerous on the wing throughout the match. He recorded two shots, one on goal, and provided the necessary finish to win the game in his 74 minutes of play. Accam’s goal was initially called offside but Video Assistant Referee Ricardo Salazar advised center official Robert Sibiga to take a second look at the play and the call was overturned.
Accam is the sixth Crew player to be named to MLS Team of the Week so far this year. Center back Gaston Sauro received the honor in Week 1 after scoring the game-tying goal. Gyasi Zardes was named to the Team of the Week in Week 2 after his two-goal performance. Before leaving for Europe, Zack Steffen earned Team of the Week honors in Week 3, 5 and 6. Federico Higuain was bestowed the honor in Week 11 before he tore his ACL and was lost for the season. This was followed by Santos in Week 14.
Next up for the Black & Gold is a trip to Red Bull Arena to take on the New York Red Bulls on Saturday night. That game is scheduled to kick off at 7:30 p.m. ET.
