Columbus Crew SC has made its first signing of the 2019 summer transfer window with the addition of Costa Rican winger Luis Diaz is on a permanent transfer as a Young Designated Player from C.S. Herediano.

Reports of Diaz’s addition to the Black & Gold began to come out of Costa Rica late last month as conversations between the clubs continued. Columbus officially announced the move on Tuesday. The transfer will be official on July 9th when the secondary transfer window opens.

“Luis is a young, dynamic player who is already making a name for himself despite his young age and we are excited to welcome him to Crew SC,” Crew resident Tim Bezbatchenko said in the press release. “As one of the most promising talents in Costa Rica, we know he will continue to develop at our Club and we believe his skillset will allow him to be successful in MLS. The addition of Luis strengthens our team as we continue to build our roster.”

According to a report from Jacob Myers of The Columbus Dispatch, that the Crew will pay C.S. Herediano $1 million for Diaz. According to those same reports, the winger signed a deal for two and a half seasons. The team also has two additional option years, meaning the deal could run through the 2023 season.

The addition of Diaz fills a hole in the Crew lineup. The team is struggling offensively and the collection of wingers have been unproductive following the injury to Federico Higuain and the move of Pedro Santos central. Diaz will have a chance to make an immediate impact on a team that has gotten no goals from current wingers David Accam, Robinho, Luis Argudo and Niko Hansen.

Only 20 years old, Diaz already has 68 first team appearances. He arrived in the Costa Rican topflight with Grecia in early 2018 and quickly transferred to Herediano that summer, spending the second half of the year on loan with Grecia. Diaz ultimately made 45 appearance for Grecia, scoring twice and adding six assists.

Diaz rapidly cemented his place in the Herediano first team after joining the team at the beginning of 2019. He played in 19 games, including 17 starts, in league play. He also started both of Herediano’s games against Atlanta United in the Champions League. He scored once and assisted twice during his time with the club.

Recently, Diaz was named the Best Under-21 Player in the Torneo Clausura 2019 by UNAFUT and won the Torneo Apertura 2018 with Herediano.

The young winger’s performances also landed him on the radar of the Costa Rican National Team. He is yet to make an appearance for the senior team, but was on the Gold Cup preliminary roster. He was omitted due to a heel injury suffered in May that is not expected to play a factor once he arrives in Columbus.
