Another Monday, another Major League Soccer Team of the Week honor for Columbus Crew SC’s Zack Steffen for his performance in the 1-0 win over the New England Revolution on Saturday. The goalkeeper was named to the Team of the Week as a bench player for the second straight week and the third time overall.
The Black & Gold goalkeeper made two saves to record his fourth shutout of the year. Steffen dove to his right in the 11th minute to deny a long-range effort from New England defender Jalil Anibaba and then got enough of a touch on a scrambling effort by Cristian Panilla in the 89th minute to preserve the shutout and the win.
In holding the Revolution without a goal, Steffen has now gone 444 minutes since conceding. The last goal he allowed was in the sixth minute of the season-opening 1-1 draw against the New York Red Bulls. Steffen has since shutout New England twice, FC Dallas and Atlanta United last week. Steffen was not in goal for the the 3-0 loss at the Philadelphia Union. Backup goalkeeper Joe Bendik started that game in place of an injured Steffen, who would have been out even if he weren’t hurt with the U.S. National Team for that game.
Crew fans should enjoy Steffen, and his Team of the Week honors, while they last. The goalkeeper will leave for Manchester City in July after a record MLS transfer for a goalkeeper was announced in early December. With the Gold Cup coming in mid-June, the Black & Gold will likely say goodbye to Steffen well before he actually leaves for the English Premier League.
Center back Gaston Sauro made the Team of the Week for the opening week of the season. Forward Gyasi Zardes, after his brace, and head coach Caleb Porter received the honors after the 2-0 win over the Revs in Week 2. No Crew players were selected after the Week 3 loss to the Union, followed by back-to-back trips on the Team of the Week for Steffen.
