Projected Lineup: Crew vs. New England Revolution

See how the Black & Gold should line up to play the Revs for the second time in 2019.

Columbus Crew SC returns home to MAPFRE Stadium this Saturday as the Black & Gold faces the New England Revolution for the second time just a month into the 2019 Major League Soccer season.

The Crew is hoping to build from last week’s victory over reigning champions Atlanta United and head coach Caleb Porter should be able to repeat last Saturday’s entire starting lineup, except for right back Harrison Afful, who broke his jaw and will be sidelined for at least six weeks.

This is how I expect the Crew to field tonight:

Bench: Joe Bendik, Josh Williams, Connor Maloney, Ricardo Clark, Justin Meram, Patrick Mullins, JJ Williams.

Footnotes:

  • Fullback Hector Jimenez is expected to make his second start of the season, the first on the right side, as he’s the most likely replacement for the injured Afful after he started on the left against the Philadelphia Union, replacing Waylon Francis. This should be one of the several starts he is expected to make over the next couple of months while the Ghanaian is out.
  • Center back Gaston Sauro, who scored twice already this season, will likely return to the starting lineup, pushing veteran Josh Williams to the bench, after he missed last match because of the flu. The Argentinean trained normally over the week and should be seen alongside Jonathan Mensah again.

Connor Maloney will probably be on the bench for just the second time in the 2019 season as he’s the only natural fullback available to Porter other than Jimenez and Francis. The 23-year-old player has just three appearances – one start – with the Crew over his first three seasons in MLS.

Do you agree with this lineup? If you were the coach, which players/formation would you send out to the field against the Revs? Let us know in the comments box below!
