Columbus Crew SC will see the field for the third time in just eight days as the team heads to Texas to face the Houston Dynamo on Saturday at the BBVA Compass Stadium. After back-to-back setbacks at home, the Black & Gold will try to bounce back with road points in the Lone Star State.
Head coach Caleb Porter has set up a plan to approach these three games and he said during the week that he would stick to it regardless of the results, so I’d expect a very different lineup against the Dynamo, with several regular starters getting a break on this trip after the congested match schedule
It’s hard to imagine what Porter has in mind, but here goes my best guess:
Bench: Joe Bendik, Lalas Abubakar, Connor Maloney, Luis Argudo, Niko Hansen, JJ Williams, Patrick Mullins.
- If Porter decides to rest the players with the most mileage in Texas, Jonathan Mensah is on the top of the list to get a day off after he played in each of the 720 minutes of the Crew season so far. If that’s the case, Josh Williams and Gaston Sauro should pair at the central defense for the first time in 2019.
- Eduardo Sosa played seven minutes last Saturday against the Portland Timbers and he should be Porter’s primary option if the coach decides to give 34-year-old Federico Higuain a break. The Venezuelan is the only natural centeral attacking midfielder on the roster besides the Argentinean and could get his first start of season in Houston.
- Pedro Santos could be another one to get some time off this week and in that case the Crew could have both Robinho and Justin Meram, who are in theory competing for a starting spot alongside the Portuguese, on the field. This combination could provide a different look for the team up front.
