Projected Lineup: Crew vs. D.C. United

After back-to-back setbacks, the Black & Gold might go all in against the Eastern Conference leaders.

After consecutive losses to the Montreal Impact and the Portland Timbers, Columbus Crew SC is looking forward to bounce back in Major League Soccer play this Wednesday as the Black & Gold host Eastern Conference leaders D.C. United at MAPFRE Stadium.

This is arguably the most important one of the three matches the Crew is set to play in an eight-day stretch as it could push the team to the top of the conference with a win and if Toronto FC and the Philadelphia Union draw.

Because of that, despite the obvious risks of not rotating players on midweek games, I expect head coach Caleb Porter to send a full-power Crew team to the field against Wayne Rooney and company.

Bench: Joe Bendik, Gaston Sauro, Lalas Abubakar, Ricardo Clark, Eduardo Sosa, Justin Meram, JJ Williams, Patrick Mullins.

  • Defender Josh Williams is expected to reappear in the lineup after being a substitute against the Timbers last weekend. There’s clear competition for a starting spot between him and Gaston Sauro and after the Argentinean was featured on Saturday, I wouldn’t be surprised to see the veteran get another opportunity this time.
  • Last match, the Crew lined up with a little bit of an offensive twist as wingers Robinho and Pedro Santos switched their usual sides, with the Brazilian playing on the right and the Portuguese on the left for part of the match – Mike Crosky broke this move down here. The strategy probably didn’t work as Porter planned, but I believe he’s going to give it another try against the United.
  • Center back Jonathan Mensah is the only player of the entire roster to be on the field in each of the 720 minutes the team played so far in 2019. The Ghanaian should get another start against D.C. and go over 800 minutes on Wednesday. Since he signed with the Crew, in 2017, he always managed to record at least 2,000 regular season minutes and he seems on pace to do it again.
