Projected Lineup: Crew vs. Portland Timbers

The Black & Gold could have changes this week – know which they would be.

MLS: Portland Timbers at Columbus Crew SC Greg Bartram-USA TODAY Sports

Columbus Crew SC returns home after dropping last week’s game to the Montreal Impact trying to bounce back against head coach Caleb Porter’s former club, the Portland Timbers, on Saturday, at MAPFRE Stadium.

Black & Gold fans are very likely to see some changes in the team’s usual lineup, as the Crew starts a three match in just eight days stretch, but Porter has given no clues about which players or positions could be impacted on his rotation.

With that said, please have in mind that the team below is nothing but my best guess on what the Crew could look like when it takes the field on Saturday:

Bench: Joe Bendik, Lalas Abubakar, Connor Maloney, Ricardo Clark, Niko Hansen, JJ Williams, Patrick Mullins.

  • Defender Jonathan Mensah is the only player to be on the field for all 630 minutes with the Crew so far. That could make him the most likely player to be rested and, if that’s the case, Josh Williams and Gaston Sauro could pair for the first time in 2019.
  • Pedro Santos has also logged significant minutes (584) and could also be in line for a time off this week. Porter has showed some willingness to give Justin Meram another look after he played well for Iraq and this game could be a good opportunity. If that’s the case, Robinho should move to the right wing.
  • With Meram potentially in the starting lineup and Santos off the game day roster, I expect JJ Williams to return to the team’s selection. The rookie scored a brace last week for Birmingham Legion of the USL and could have a chance with the Crew against the Timbers.

Do you agree with this lineup? If you were the coach, which players/formation would you send out to the field against the Timbers? Join the discussion and let us know in the comments box bellow!
