The Columbus Crew face a big afternoon road test as they face the Montreal Impact. The last game on the road was a 3-0 blowout loss with several key players missing due to the international break. The Black & Gold have the chance to extend their best start since 2010 with a road win.
The Crew will be playing a nearly full strength lineup as they try to get their second road win of the season. The team has been unbeatable at home, but now they face a real road test as the schedule gets busy. With games against D.C., Houston, LAFC, and the LA Galaxy coming up, this is one of the rare chances to face off against a team at the edge of the playoff picture rather than the top of the standings.
The hosts will be missing their key offensive cog Ignacio Piatti for a fourth straight game. They have yet to win without him this season, going 0-2-1, all on the road since he was sidelined. They still have Saphir Taider, co-team leader in goals with three and they will be buoyed playing their home opener after a six game road trip.
What to read:
Ralph Schudel watched the Piatti-less Impact and came back with a scouting report. With the offensive struggles, Jimmy Lentz looked at whether the Crew should think about changing up how the team plays. This week, Guilherme Torres examined how a now healthy Niko Hansen will help the team. The staff is mixed on how the Black & Gold’s will fare in the challenging trip to Montreal. Torres also considered how Columbus may line up in the matchup with the Impact.
90’: Montreal holds on to see out the 1-0 victory over Columbus Crew SC.
70’ Columbus earns a corner that hits the underside of the crossbar. It appears that it might have gone in but a check by the VAR proves otherwise. Montreal still leads 1-0.
55’ Montreal breaks through as Maximiliano Urruti creates a turnover, dispossessing Jonathan Mensah. He connects with Harry Novillo who scores his first goal in Major League Soccer and gives the Impact the 1-0 advantage.
45’ Halftime is upon us and it’s still scoreless.
22’ A quality chance for Columbus as Hector Jimenez finds Higuain on a trailing run but the shot is collected by Evan Bush cleanly.
1’ Kickoff from Montreal!
Injuries, Suspensions, and Call-ups:
The Crew: Only two names are on the injury list and they will both be out for a while. Harrison Afful will be out with a broken jaw for at least a month and likely longer. Milton Valenzuela is on the season-ending injury list with his ACL tear. There are no suspensions or call-ups.
Impact: The big name is that maestro Ignacio Piatti will miss the game. He’s not fully recovered from the knee injury suffered in mid-March. Midfielder Ken Krolicki dislocated his elbow in preseason. He’s not ready to join the team. Backup goalkeeper Jason Beaulieu will be out until midseason at the earliest due to cyst removed on his left knee.
