After back-to-back home victories, Columbus Crew SC goes on the road again this Saturday to face the Montreal Impact at Stade Saputo and try to remain on top of the Eastern Conference after the seventh week of the 2019 Major League Soccer season.
Head coach Caleb Porter seems to be a proponent of the old adage “if it’s not broke, don’t fix it.” So since he has all starters from last weekend available, I don’t expect any changes in the lineup as the Black & Gold head north of the American border for the first time in 2019.
This is how I expect the Crew to play:
Bench: Joe Bendik, Gaston Sauro, Lalas Abubakar, Ricardo Clark, Justin Meram, Niko Hansen, Patrick Mullins
- Defender Josh Williams is expected to get his third straight start after he scored the game-winning goal against the New England Revolution last week. The veteran has dealt with a plantar fasciitis during preseason, but took advantage of the opportunity he had when Gaston Sauro was ill and should be in the lineup again.
- Strikers Patrick Mullins and JJ Williams were both in the bench in the first five matches of the season, but it seems now they are competing for just one spot in the game day roster. Porter said this week he prefers having two wingers and just one striker available as subs and with Niko Hansen back from injury, he should fill one of those spots. Porter’s decision on who would be on the bench became apparent when it was announced on Friday that Williams was going on loan for the weekend.
- The Crew did not had a natural fullback on the bench last week and I believe that will be the case again. If one of the starting fullbacks happens to go down, Porter would have to improvise and Josh Williams, on the right side, and Pedro Santos, on the left, are the most likely options to fill those roles.
