It will be a busy international week for three more Columbus Crew SC players. After Harrison Afful was called into the Ghana squad, Wil Trapp, Zack Steffen, and Gyasi Zardes were called into the U.S. National Team squad that plays Brazil on Friday and Mexico next Tuesday.
Wil Trapp and Zack Steffen have been busy with the National Team this year. Both players have been part of the rebuilding process after the U.S. missed out on the 2018 World Cup. Steffen appears to be the preferred starting goalkeeper for the American squad. He has tallied three senior caps, all this year, but has a long history with the youth national teams. As other goalkeepers have struggled with form, the Crew SC net minder has put in two consecutive strong seasons in MLS.
Trapp had been on the fringes of the player pool throughout the last qualifying push, getting time in the MLS heavy winter camps, but has become a key starter in 2018. The Crew SC captain has started four games this year, taking the armband for the U.S. squad. Though only 25 years old, Trapp is a veteran of six MLS campaigns and has captained Columbus for three seasons.
Veteran international Zardes makes his return to the national team after a very strong 2018 league season. The striker has 15 goals in league play, nearing a career his 16 set in 2014. Zardes has 38 caps in his career, last appearing during the January camp with Trapp and Steffen.
The trio will join the National Team for games in New Jersey on Friday, September 7th against Brazil. The team then heads to Nashville for a friendly against rival Mexico on Tuesday, the 11th. The international call-ups won’t miss any league time as Crew SC is off for the international break and will return to action on Saturday, the 15th.
