Columbus Crew SC right back Harrison Afful has been called into the Ghanian National Team squad for the upcoming 2019 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Kenya on Sept. 8. The news was first reported by Pro Soccer USA’s Ben Ferree earlier today.
Afful has been a constant presence with the Black Stars, earning 76 caps for the national team since 2008. He was a part of the Ghanian AFCON teams for the 2008, 2010, 2013 and 2015 editions. He was also a part of the 2014 World Cup squad, making two appearances in the tournament.
Ghana is trying to qualify for next year’s Africa Cup of Nations and has been drawn into a group with Kenya, Sierra Leone and Ethiopia. They are currently 1-0-0 after one game. The team’s progress could also impact Crew SC during the playoff stretch run as they face Sierra Leone twice in October and Ethiopia in November before finishing with a game against Kenya next March.
Afful won’t miss any games with the team as Crew SC is off during the international break. The right back has been a mainstay in the lineup. He’s started 25 of the team’s 26 games in 2018. Gregg Berhalter’s system gives freedom for Afful to get involved offensively and he responded with a goal and added five assists.
The Ghanian fullback was signed by the Black & Gold in July of 2015. Since his addition, Afful has made 88 regular season appearances with 85 starts. He has four goals and 11 assists in that time and has established himself as one of Major League Soccer’s most dangerous attacking wing backs.
