Game Thread: Crew SC at Los Angeles Galaxy

A Black & Gold nightcap

MLS: D.C. United at Los Angeles Galaxy Kirby Lee-USA TODAY Sports

Columbus Crew SC got a win at home last weekend, struggling to close out Real Salt Lake. They head west to face another team that has underperformed in 2018 in the LA Galaxy. The hosts fave sunk below the playoff line and currently are in the 8th spot in the Western Conference.

Columbus opened the season strong, but has a single win in June, drifting down the standings. Crew SC now lie in fourth in a very fierce Eastern Conference with the most games played in the league. A win would push them up to second, with trailing teams having several games in hand.

LA needs wins to just be in the playoff picture. They’ve been terrible at home, only Colorado has more than their four losses at Stubhub. They have a single win in their last five games and have slipped a point behind the Whitecaps. With the novelty of Zlatan wearing off, the Galaxy can use points.

Full Time: Thankfully over as Crew SC lose 4-0 to the Galaxy. Early promise wasted as the hosts capitalize.

93’ Alessandrini with a rocket. It’s 4-0 and the desolation of #CrewSC is complete.\

85’ Losing and listless as Crew SC still losing 3-0 in LA.

76’ For those still awake. Still Crew SC trailing 3-0 to the Galaxy. There will be no Toronto magic tonight.

69’ Zardes, Hansen, and Afful all have cracks from inside the 6 yard box and they are all blocked. No joy for Crew SC tonight.

67’ LA Galaxy up 3-0 now as Alessandrini strips the ball from Abubakar. Lalas is having a nightmare tonight.

62’ Federico Higuain replaces Ricardo Clark. That’s the final Crew SC substitution.

59’ Mike Grella replaces Luis Argudo. 2nd Crew SC substitution.

57’ Ibrahimovic puts it off the post and converts. Steffen nearly got it, but it was perfectly taken.

55’ LA Galaxy penalty upcoming as Abubakar trundles into Ibrahimovic. Looks pretty soft, but Zlatan to take.

53’ Pontius is in to the box and is shouldered off the ball with a strong challenge by Clark. Calls for PKs are waved off.

51’ Sosa with a nice move in the box and slips a pass to Hansen. Close range shot is blocked. That looks better for Crew SC.

49’ Gio Dos Santos turns around Josh Williams twice and only a last minute Abubakar stop deflects the close range shot.

46’ Niko Hansen replaces Pedro Santos to open the second half.

Halftime: LA has the 1-0 lead after a defensive lapse and VAR controversy.

43’ VAR denies. Crew SC has an equalizer wiped off the board by video review. From the kickoff, Zardes appears to dig the ball from the touchline and it’s poked into the goal by a Galaxy player. After a quick video review, it’s back to 1-0. Broadcast reviews were inconclusive.

42’ Goal to LA with Ola Kamara finishing off an Ashley Cole cross from deep. It was easy after Cole beat Pedro Santos from the right side.

40’ Columbus attack has stalled with ball slowly played in the midfield. LA chooses not to pressure and is rewarded with a turnover.

30’ Not many shots lately. Crew SC have more possession while LA outlets to Zlatan to counterattack.

17’ LA coming into some possession and Gio Dos Santos makes a nice turn and shot, but it’s wide of Steffen’s net.

11’ Corner from Crew SC headed back into the middle by Josh Williams. Lalas Abubakar pops the header over. Bright start from Columbus tonight.

10’ Chance for Columbus. Afful drives through the mid-third and sends a beautiful pass to Sosa. The shot goes just wide from the rookie, but Bingham had it covered.

4’ Off an Afful turnover, LA puts the ball in the back of the net, but Gio Dos Santos was offside by yards. No goal.
