Columbus Crew SC announced on Wednesday that Costa Rican club Deportivo Saprissa is making the journey to MAPFRE Stadium as part of an international friendly on July 3. This match marks the Black & Gold’s 23rd all-time international friendly. Saprissa joins the ranks of recent opponents Crew SC opponents such as English Premier League club Crystal Palace, La Liga side Valencia, Liga MX side Veracruz and Bundesliga club Eintracht Frankfurt.

This match marks the fifth meeting with the Black & Gold and Saprissa. The two sides previously met in a two-leg CONCACAF Giants Cup series in 2001 and again in a CONCACAF Champions League in 2009. Crew SC holds a 1-1-2 all-time record against the Costa Rican side.

Deportivo Saprissa visits MAPFRE Stadium for a third time on the heels of a 2018 Clausura tournament victory and will represent Costa Rica in the 2019 CONCACAF Champions League. Meanwhile, Crew SC hopes to improve on its 12-6-3 record all-time in international exhibitions. The Black & Gold last faced Bundesliga side Eintracht Frankfurt in 2017 and won by the score of 1-0.
