Columbus Crew SC’s good performance on Sunday's scoreless tie against Western Conference leaders Sporting Kansas City was acknowledged around Major League Soccer as both center back Josh Williams and midfielder Artur were selected for the MLS Team of the Week, the league announced.
Williams, who was paired with Lalas Abubakar in central defense against Kansas City, had a pivotal role on the team’s fifth-straight shutout as the veteran helped Crew SC’s defense with one interception, one clearance and one block. His most impressive stat in the match, though, was his passing accuracy as the 30-year-old center back delivered 96.8 percent of his passes perfectly to his teammates.
Artur, who covered a lot of ground in the game, especially after Federico Higuain’s red card, had two interceptions and two clearances to go with a team-high 62 passes and 85.5 percent efficiency on them. The Brazilian also led the team in dribbles, with three.
Sporting Kansas City’s goalkeeper Tim Melia, who denied a potential Crew SC’s game-winning goal when he saved Gyasi Zardes’ penalty kick near the end of the first half, made the bench of MLS’s Team of the Week.
Undefeated in the last six matches, the Crew returns home this Saturday as it faces reigning MLS champions Toronto FC at MAPFRE Stadium at 7.30 p.m.
