Connor Maloney is heading home to the state of Pennsylvania, at least temporarily. Columbus Crew SC announced Friday morning that the Harrisburg, Pennsylvania native wll join the Pittsburgh Riverhounds of the United Soccer League via a loan agreement. The loan is on a game-by-game basis and Crew SC retains the right to recall the player at any point during the Major League Soccer regular season.
Maloney was selected with the fifth pick in the third round (49th overall) of the 2017 MLS SuperDraft on January 17, 2017. Since joining the Black & Gold, Maloney has made two regular-season appearances (one start) registering one assist. Before joining Crew SC, Maloney played four seasons at Penn State, making 73 appearances (all starts), scoring 26 goals and recording 17 assists during his time there. Maloney was a three-time First Team All-Big Ten Conference player (2016, 2015, 2014).
Being behind starting fullback and Ghanian national team defender Harrison Afful has limited Maloney’s time in the Black & Gold first team. The 23 year old also has to contend with veteran winger Hector Jimenez, who often deputizes at either fullback spot for Gregg Berhalter’s men.
The outside back may see immediate action as the Riverhounds welcome in-state rival Penn FC to Highmark Stadium in Pittburgh on Saturday night. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. EST.
