Columbus Crew SC center back Jonathan Mensah was named to the Major League Soccer Team of the Week on Monday. Jonathan was part of the Crew SC team that shutout the New England Revolution on Saturday in the 1-0 victory.

Alongside second-year defender Lalas Abubakar, Jonathan was a steady defensive presence yet again for the Black & Gold. The veteran center back made four total tackles, with one interception and five clearances to help his side hold New England off the board. This shutout marks the fourth consecutive clean sheet for Columbus. Jonathan, along with forward Gyasi Zardes, was also a factor helping to setup Abubakar’s header goal from a corner kick.

Jonathan has played, and started, in 12 of Crew SC’s 13 matches in 2018, missing only 97 minutes including sitting out three weeks ago at the Seattle Sounders. In his second year with Columbus, Jonathan has settled into the team’s center back role, helping the Black & Gold to league’s best defense with only 10 goals conceded in a league-high 13 games played.

This marks Jonathan’s first appearance on the MLS Team of the Week in 2018.

Crew SC will travel to take on Sporting Kansas City on Sunday. SKC currently sits atop the Western Conference, tied with the Black & Gold with 24 points. The match is scheduled to kickoff at 6 p.m. and will be broadcast on Fox Sports 1.
