Columbus Crew SC managed to get its second preseason win on Sunday as the Black & Gold prevailed over MLS Western Conference champions Seattle Sounders 2 -1 in a scrimmage played at the University of Arizona’s Mulcahy Soccer Stadium, in Tucson, where both are preparing for the upcoming season. Forwards Colin Biros, one of four Crew SC Academy players on preseason, and Adam Jahn scored the goals.
The Black & Gold lined up in the first half of the scrimmage with Zack Steffen in goal, a backline of Harrison Afful, Alex Crognale, Jonathan Mensah and rookie Edward Opoku, Ricardo Clark, Mohammed Abu and Federico Higuain in midfield, Niko Hansen and Biros on the wings and Gyasi Zardes up top.
As it happened in the scrimmage against the Colorado Rapids last week, Crew SC scored early in the first half with Biros finishing a cross from Hansen from the penalty spot to beat goalkeeper Bryan Meredith only five minutes in to the match.
The Sounders, who had mostly a reserve lineup as they had faced the Portland Timbers the night before, tied the match in the 28th minute after Victor Rodríguez dribbled the ball for quite a few yards, beat Crognale and finished on Steffen’s low corner from inside the penalty box.
Crew SC came into the second half with a completely different lineup of Logan Ketterer; Connor Maloney, Josh Williams, Lalas Abubakar and Hector Jimenez; Wil Trapp, Luis Argudo, Pedro Santos, Eduardo Sosa and Cristian Martinez; Adam Jahn.
The forward ultimately scored the game-winner in the 78th minute, deflecting a cross from Santos to the back of the net.
