It’s been a long and tumultuous year, but the 2018 Columbus Crew SC season reached its conclusion on Sunday night. A 3-0 shutout loss to the New York Red Bulls put an end to a lengthy season in Central Ohio. Fans anticipated that this day would come, but weren’t sure of the emotions that would accompany it.
Luckily, on Oct. 12, the community was provided with some clarity when an investment group consisting of Pete Edwards and Cleveland Browns owners Jimmy and Dee Haslam emerged with a plan to Save The Crew.
With the promise of that security blanket lurking in fans minds, it made Sunday’s loss easier to cope with. Fans took to social media to express their appreciation of the teams effort throughout the season.
"Honestly, I'm mentally exhausted from this [#CrewSC / #Crew96] season. Ready to think about something else. Next season will be fun." My good friend @Godandcoffee after last night's game, and I can't really disagree. #SaveTheCrew #SavedTheCrew— Flick (@mikeflick) November 12, 2018
Still disappointed about the @ColumbusCrewSC match last night, but let’s have some perspective. I’ve been watching Cleveland sports and muttering about “next year” my entire life. At least #CrewSC HAS a next year to look forward to. Could have been a lot worse.— John Melick (@Floydmulder) November 12, 2018
The Crew SC story has captured the hearts of the entire Central Ohio community. From city officials, local celebrities, businesses or former players, everyone stood firmly in the corner of the Black & Gold.
I’ve always hated the phrase “well, we have next year” but the past year and season has been anything but normal. While I’m disappointed in tonight’s result, I’m looking forward to the future! #Crew96 #savedthecrew #SaveTheCrew— Dante Washington (@DanteWashington) November 12, 2018
So proud to be part of the @ColumbusCrewSC family! What a ride, rough way for it to end but this will go down as the year that we #SavedTheCrew and the way this club fought through that adversity off the field was legendary. Love this club!— Pursuit (@pursuityourself) November 12, 2018
Waking up to the results of the #CrewSC match. Hold your heads high. You’ve had a amazing season. Best part? You’ll be in #Columbus next year to do it all again! We’re proud of you! @ColumbusCrewSC #SaveTheCrew #SavedTheCrew— Kurt Ludlow (@KurtWSYX6) November 12, 2018
Congratulations to @ColumbusCrewSC for an amazing season!— Mayor Andrew Ginther (@MayorGinther) November 12, 2018
Definitely not pleased with what just happened. But I won’t let it overshadow that those guys gave a lot this year with incredibly adverse situations. Changes are coming, no doubt. But I appreciate what @ColumbusCrewSC did this season. On to the next chapter! #SavedTheCrew— Austin Ward (@AWardSports) November 12, 2018
It’s been a crazy season and one that will linger in the minds of Crew fans for a lifetime. It’s not common to see the little guy dethrone the big cooperation, but that’s exactly what Save The Crew did. Because of the efforts of dedicated individuals, no one should be ashamed of saying “there’s always next year.”
Looking forward to seeing you all again in 2019.
