Columbus Crew SC teased a major signing on Monday in a tweet, but unveiled their prime capture in Obetz today. Pedro Santos has signed a deal with the team and becomes the third Designated Player on the roster.

Santos, 29, arrives after a reported $2.3 million dollar transfer fee with Portuguese club SC Braga. The terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Santos has played mainly on the right wing during his career. He’s seen as gifted on the ball and is able to create his own shot or set up a teammate. It’s a scouting report that sounds similar to Justin Meram. Much like Meram, he often looks to cut inside onto his preferred foot. In addition to his time on the right side of the midfield, Santos has also has significant experience playing on the left for Braga.

He enjoyed quite a bit of success since joining Braga in 2014. During his three seasons, Santos has tallied 18 goals and 16 assists in 76 league matches and was instrumental in the team’s appearances in the Europa League.

The winger is coming off an injury plagued season and a change in role. Santos struggled during the second half of last season after breaking his foot in November 2016. He returned to action in January of this year, but bounced around the lineup, playing on the right, then left side of midfield. His goal scoring numbers suffered, but he tallied five assists in 2017 as Braga slipped to fifth place in the 2016-2017 season after consecutive fourth place finishes.
