Rookie Alex Crognale has been named to the MLS Team of the Week for Major League Soccer’s Week 20.
The Columbus Crew SC defender once again stepped into the center of a three-man backline in the club’s 1-0 win over the Philadelphia Union and provided cover defensively for the team. He was also a leader in the back, directing Jonathan Mensah and fellow rookie Lalas Abubakar on either side of him.
“Alex is in the middle and he’s kind of controlling us,” Jonathan said postgame of his center-back partner, “saying when we should go and when we should stay.”
The Homegrown player, who attended Maryland, has made 13 appearances for the Black & Gold this season with nine starts. He has played 90 minutes in each of the last two MLS games for Gregg Berhalter’s side, as the head coach turns to a three-man backline in an effort to improve a defense that has conceded 31 goal in 21 matches.
Crognale may be asked to lead the backline again on Wednesday as Crew SC travel to the Union, looking for more strong defensive play and three more points.
