The United State men’s national team began Gold Cup play on Saturday in a 1-1 draw with Panama.
The U.S. got a second half goal from Dom Dwyer before the Panamanians equalized 10 minutes later through Miguel Camargo.
Widely considered the toughest game of the group, the opening result wasn’t surprising, but the performance was. The Yanks recoded 13 shots, 10 on goal, but could not come away with more than one finish. The players looked sluggish and the hope for the U.S. is that it was more the heat than anything else.
That game is now behind the Red, White & Blue and it’s on to Match 2. Wednesday night’s opponent, Martinique, took care of its business in the opener against Nicaragua. The final score was 2-0, but it could have been much worse.
Les Matinino now sit atop Group B with three points, making this game that much more interesting.
Can Bruce Arena get it right in this midweek match where his side are certainly the favorites? We will see.
John Strong is on the call alongside Landon Donovan and Stu Holden. Jenny Taft will be the sideline reporter.
