The matchups were determined based on region and the host for each game was decided by coin flip.
The Open Cup holds a special place in longtime Crew SC fans’ hearts. The club won the 2002 tournament 1-0 over the LA Galaxy at MAPFRE Stadium thanks to a goal by midfielder Freddy Garcia. The Black & Gold were also in the final in 1998 — falling 2-1 in extra time to the Chicago Fire at Soldier Field — and in 2010 — lost 2-1 to the Seattle Sounders at Qwest Field.
Since falling to Seattle in the finals in 2010, Columbus has failed to make it to the quarterfinals, losing three times to the Fire.
Gregg Berhalter’s side will give it another go this season, beginning with this matchup which will likely kickoff on June 14.
