For the second consecutive week, Columbus Crew SC has multiple players named to the MLS Team of the Week following a victory.
After the 2-0 road win over D.C. United a week ago, the Black & Gold saw two young players, rookie center-back Alex Crognale and goalkeeper Zack Steffen, along with head coach Gregg Berhalter get the honor.
This week, with only six Major League Soccer teams in action, Columbus had three players named to the Team of the Week following the 3-2 home win over the Portland Timbers.
Attacking midfielder Federico Higuain was given the honor after playing his best game of the young season for Crew SC. He played a dangerous corner kick that led to the opening goal and contributed a phenomenal assist on Ola Kamara’s chip.
Artur joined Higuain in the midfield on the Team of the Week after just his fourth MLS game. The Brazilan completed 86 percent of his passes against the Timbers and was able to help contain a potent Portland midfield.
Right back Harrison Afful took on a new role, working centrally rather than his normal wide position. He was not only a factor defensively on the right side, but helped to breakup counter attacks in the midfield and played a vital part in getting Higuain the ball on Kamara’s goal and finding the forward on a cross that led to Niko Hansen’s late winner.
His efforts see him on the Team of the Week for the first time in 2017.
