Columbus Crew SC played its first game of 2017 on Sunday, a closed-door scrimmage against Brasileirão-side Sao Paulo FC in Sao Paulo, Brazil.
While details of the exhibition were not released by the club (just photos), it appears it did not go well.
Sao Paulo released some highlights from the match and if this is anything to go off of, it was a one-side affair for the home side in what reportedly was a 7-0 beatdown.
The video shows Crew SC’s new-look three-man back line that clearly struggles to defend the Brazilian’s attack.
It is important to remember that this is the first game of the preseason and the score is not necessarily important. Sao Paulo is set to begin the spring portion of their season in early February and the players are clearly more fit and prepared than their Columbus counterparts.
Head coach Gregg Berhalter is looking to build his team chemistry and get in shape and the results, while never the focus in preseason, will become more significant as we get closer to the start of the regular season on March 4.
Massive Report will keep you posted on any more news that comes out of Crew SC’s preseason trip.
