Columbus Crew SC 2016 vs. Sporting Kansas City: Game Time, TV Schedule, Live Stream

Everything you need for tonight’s Black & Gold match.

MLS: Sporting KC at Columbus Crew SC Greg Bartram-USA TODAY Sports

Columbus Crew SC have only three wins, the last one, three games and over a month ago due to the Copa America break. Now they travel for their only meeting against Sporting Kansas City.

Sporting sit outside the competitive Western Conference playoff picture with 22 points in 18 games. After struggling with an injury bug, the home side should be much more healthy, including Dom Dwyer (8 goals) rounding into form with a brace against Montreal during Sporting’s last league match. Benny Feilhaber now has a goal and two assists in his last two games.

The club will still be without central defender Gaston Sauro (PCL tear), creative midfielder Federico Higuain (sports hernia surgery), Cedrick Mabwati (malaria), and Conor Casey (knee injury). Mohammed Saied and Dilly Duka were scheduled for late fitness tests and may not play. Building a functioning lineup will be a challenge.

A loss or a tie would see Crew SC would be within a bad result from 10th in the Conference while win would bring Columbus up to 19 points and a single point out of the playoffs.

Keys to the Match

  • Defending Dwyer: He’s crafty and is adept at getting into scoring position. His movement could cause plenty of problems for Parkhurst and Wahl and open up the space behind him. It will be a team effort to counter one of the most mobile forwards in MLS.
  • Kansas City’s midfield trio vs. Trapp/Tchani: Berhalter looks for two players to do most of the work in midfield. Trapp and Tchani are often tasked with taking on the opposing midfield and can get outnumbered. If Crew SC’s attacking midfielder has to help more, that stymies the attack.
  • More from the Attack(ing Midfield): Columbus is struggling without Higuain. Saied has been limited, likely due to his ongoing issues with his fractured lumbar. Cristian Martinez has performed well in spots, but is only 19 and will be up and down. Crew SC need someone to step up and provide that vision to get the ball into dangerous spots.
