Columbus Crew SC Aren’t Done Adding Players

New, 3 comments

If there’s a signing you’re hoping for, don’t extinguish those hopes yet.

It was not much of a surprise on Thursday when Columbus Crew SC announced the signing of 23-year old defender Nicolai Næss from Norwegian club Stabæk. As is often the case these days, the news was reported a day previous as all but done.

For some fans, who were hoping for a more high-profile name to join the Black & Gold and help turn around a disappointing season, the transfer news may have been a bit of a letdown.

If you are in that camp, have no fear. The transfer window does not close for nearly two more weeks and Crew SC is still at work to bring in at least one more addition.

Sources close to the club have indicated to Massive Report that a "big-name player" is likely in the offing. Head coach Gregg Berhalter has made it no secret that he is looking to add more attacking options to help bolster and offense that is below the middle of the pack in Major League Soccer.

Berhalter also indicated the club would like to add another goalkeeper, as rookie Matt Pacifici is done for the season with concussion issues. This leaves only starter Steve Clark and backup Brad Stuver as rostered keepers.

Shortly after the official announcement of Næss’ signing, Crew SC owner Anthony Precourt took to Twitter to reassure fans that this was not the end for Columbus in the transfer market.

When asked if this was the marquee signing of the summer, Berhalter was rather candid, agreeing with Precourt that the club was probably not done yet.

"I would expect other signings," he said. "That would be my advice [to the fans]."

During the offseason, Crew SC was linked with Colombian striker Radamel Falcao. Speculation is high surrounding a surname near and dear to Black & Gold fans’ hearts as Gonzalo Higuain, brother of Crew SC midfielder Federico, is apparently set to leave Italian club Napoli. While names clubs like Arsenal and Juventus are being linked to the player, it hasn’t stopped rumors that the 28-year old forward might be interested in playing with is brother in MLS.

With an attacking option likely to be added soon, who would you like to see in a Crew SC uniform? Are there other positions fans would like filled and by who?
