Saturday’s Columbus Crew SC match with the New York Red Bulls marks the final home game for the Black & Gold before Independence Day. Not only will there be post-match fireworks, as has become the norm with the Fourth of July contest, but the club will wear special jerseys.
These kits will not differ too much from the all black outfit Columbus has worn the last two seasons, but will feature numbers with American flag coloring instead of the traditional Major League Soccer white numbers.
Crew SC, and teams around the league, have done something similar over the last few seasons. In 2014, the Black & Gold had Military Appreciation Night on May 24 where the players wore camouflage numbers on their mostly white kits. Last year, Columbus wore both home and away jerseys that included printed images of select season ticket members throughout the month of August and the beginning of September.
The Columbus club made headlines when Massive Report first reported last June that the team would go away from the iconic gold kits. In February, the Black & Gold debuted the new "For Columbus" uniforms that feature the colors of the Columbus flag.
The last two years, the limited edition jerseys have been auctioned off following matches. It is likely the same will be done with the new flagged kits.
Massive Report will have more information on Saturday’s uniforms as it becomes available.
