Crew SC announced Thursday that they were waiving Amro Tarek. The 23 year old Egyptian featured just once for the Black and Gold, appearing as a late sub against NYCFC. He was signed on a season long loan from Real Betis in February. He was considered a low-risk addition to the depth in defense, as Crew SC didn't pay a loan fee or any of his salary, as Betis came to Columbus with the offer.
Citing "strong, veteran defensive depth" keeping Tarek from the field, Crew SC elected to release Tarek early enough in the season to land elsewhere. Tarek was, and remains, highly rated, but found himself stuck behind veteran CB Tyson Wahl, and it is likely the coaching staff saw his lack of MLS experience as a deciding factor.
This leaves the Black and Gold with three open roster spots, though does not open up another international spot, due to Tarek being born in the US. It should be noted that the MLS transfer window closes on 5/11, so this move comes shortly before the deadline. It remains to be seen if Tarek will end up elsewhere in the States, or if he will be heading back to Europe.
