The Copa America Centenario may take a bite out of Crew SC depth with Ethan Finlay and Waylon Francis named to the preliminary roster for their respective countries. MLS is taking a break during the group stages of the tourney, but both could miss time during the run up to the tournament.
Finlay was brought into the US squad for the January camp and has quickly seized his opportunity. He now has three caps as Jurgen Klinsmann has used him and his speed to attack worn out defenses. He’s grabbed an assist and had a goal called back during the win against Guatemala at MAPFRE in March. If he is named to the full squad, he’ll miss at least two games during the ramp up for the tournament, the home game against Real Salt Lake and the June 1st midweek matchup in Philadelphia.
Francis has been a part of the Costa Rican setup for several years, but has just five caps despite being on the 2014 World Cup squad. The Ticos have not released their training camp plans, but final rosters are due on May 20th and Francis could join his national team soon after. He might miss the game against Toronto if head coach Oscar Ramírez calls for a longer camp.
Crew SC may have an additional Copa America absence as Panamanian target Cristian Martinez was also named to the full Panamanian national team despite being 19. Martinez is expected to sign within the week after Berhalter confirmed the interest on Monday. Martinez has a single cap with the full team.
