The preseason is moving quickly for Columbus Crew SC. The Black & Gold are a week and a half from the start of the regular season on Sunday March 6.
Before that, Crew SC has the team's third preseason contest Wednesday night against USL club Swope Park Rangers as the third match of the 2016 Desert Diamond Cup.
So far in the preseason, Columbus is 0-0-2 after a 2-2 draw with Sporting Kansas City in the opening game and 1-1 tie with Real Salt Lake over the weekend. Forward Kei Kamara has scored all three goals for the Black & Gold as he continues to look for an improved contract offer.
The opponents on Wednesday enters the match with a tournament record of 1-0-1. SPR, who are owned by Sporting, defeated the Colorado Rapids 3-1 in the side's opening game before a 0-0 draw with Arizona United on Saturday.
Recently, head coach Gregg Berhalter said fans could expect to see a more first-choice lineup by this match as the team looks to finalize preparations for the start of the regular season. After the starters played 62 minutes against RSL, expect something similar in this contest.
After this match, Crew SC will have one more game in the Desert Diamond Cup on Saturday. The time and opponent are yet to be named.
With what will likely be more of the first team lineup, the Black & Gold will be searching for that first win of the preseason. While results don't matter, it is always nice to start the regular season with some momentum and victory here could jump-start that heading into Saturday and then the following weekend.
